Cornerstone: working with churches in Stevenage to give young people the opportunity to know and follow Jesus
Vision:
- To see unity amongst Christians and churches working together with and for young people in Stevenage and beyond.
- To see teams of youth serving God.
- To nurture young people- both churched and unchurched:
- We believe that, following the example set by Jesus, nurturing will happen naturally when we build relationships and share our lives with people. This happens in Cornerstone in a number of ways- e.g. through involving young people in team building activities like the bar teams, football, weekends away or through regular youth clubs and events.
- To work in relationship with local churches and other organisations
- To strive for excellence in all we do
- To work within the boundaries of best practice in terms of H&S, CP and employment issues
Outline description of current work:
Cornerstone is about creating opportunities for young people aged 11-18 to explore and grow in relationship with Jesus Christ. Cornerstone events and projects are aimed at providing a context and a place for young people to get connected with God and with the church. The aim is to present real Christianity that relates to, and makes sense to, young people.
The various projects are managed by two project managers, Maxine Howarth and Phil Gibb, who are assisted by a number of great volunteers and supported by a team of Trustees.
The Managers and the Trustees will look at the strategic direction of Cornerstone and make decisions regarding the future direction.
Very Brief History: Cornerstone was formed in 1994 from a desire across different churches to work together, specifically to support and develop the young people of Stevenage. Since then it has hosted and taken part in many activities and events, taken on many roles (lead- and support-) and has partnered with many different organisations - statutory, educational, faith-based, local and national.
