Thomas Alleynes
We have continued to do regular lesson support work in school, and 2
volunteers have been going in weekly to help with 2 or 3 lessons.
They have been supporting staff in the delivery of RE and are on hand
to give a Christian viewpoint if needed. They have also built some
positive relationships with young people, and had some great discussions.
God has been good and faithful to us in strengthening the good relationship
we have had with the school for some time. Next year sees one of the volunteers
on maternity leave, so unfortunately we won't be able to be involved in as
many lessons unless we manage to recruit more volunteers. One of the local
church leaders has also been invited in to deliver a number of lessons over
the year, to a variety of year groups, which has proved to be a fantastic
opportunity to share the gospel with young people.
We have also been involved in something called TIC TAC TAS (Teenage Information
Centre, Teenage Advice Centre, Thomas Allenye School). This is a drop in held
two lunchtimes a week, which is staffed by professionals who are available to
chat to young people, and give advice or support where it is needed. This has
given us the opprotunity to chat with young people on a more informal level.
There is the possibility of extending this to be an after-school club, if
enough volunteers are available. |
Heathcote
We have continued to do 3 lessons a week of lesson support work in Heathcote,
which has proved to be very fruitful, and has resulted in some very good
relationships with students and staff. The last academic year saw the
headmistress retire, and Mr Gaynor take over as head of the school.
Obviously, it will take some time to build up a relationship with the new
head, but already there seem to be some doors opening, as we have been
approached to start a brand new Christian Club in the Autumnn. This is
such an opportunity to glorify God and to get young christians meeting
together regularly. Staff levels permitting, this is something we hope
to undertake in the coming year. |
Barclays
We have continued running the Christian Union at Barclay, and now get between
6 and 15 young people regularly attending. Amazingly, of these young people,
2 of them have any regular church contact as far as we are aware. This is
such a great opportunity to tell young people about Jesus, and we have had
some amazing discussions and debates. One of the leaders has decided not
to continue with the club in the Autumn, so we are really keen to find at
least one new volunteer to lend their spport to this next year. |
Marriotts
We were invited, fairly early on in the year, to help out with the
school mentoring programme in Marriotts. This involved meeting with a
young person on a one-to-one, weekly basis, and assisting them with reading,
writing or anything else that they might need help with. 8 people volunteered,
and they have been meeting with their young people for the best part of a year,
and have built really strong relationships with them during that time. Some
of the young people have moved on a couple of years in their reading age as
a result of the input they have received from volunteers. The majority of
volunteers are continuing in the autumn, and we hope to have some new volunteers
supporting the scheme too. |
