KADOMA link – a beginner’s guide

Key words:

KADOMA: town in the country of Zimbabwe, twinned with Stevenage.
RIMUKA: a township located within Kadoma.
SUNGANO: an inter-church youthwork from Kadoma. The word ‘sungano’ means ‘Unity’ in the language of Shona.
CORNERSTONE: an inter-church youthwork from Stevenage.

The hope for a link between groups of young people from Kadoma and Stevenage began in 1995 with a visit from church leaders from Kadoma. During the visit, one of the ministers expressed a hope for a ‘youth link’ as part of the ongoing friendship between the two towns.

This hope turned to reality, when, after a number of meetings between the Kadoma: Stevenage Link committee and Cornerstone, a trip was planned for representatives from Cornerstone to visit Kadoma in the summer of 1997. The success of that trip encouraged both Cornerstone and Sungano, and their respective towns, to plan a return visit for the summer of 1998. By the end of the summer of 1998 an important link had been forged between the two groups. Cornerstone returned in the summer 2001. Since then, due to political problems, further visits have been put on hold, but Cornerstone remains in close contact through the Link Association.
